Frequently Asked Questions

How big are the rolls?
Each roll is 2’ x 5’ which equals 10 square feet.
How many square feet on a pallet?
There is 500 square feet per pallet.
How much does one pallet weigh?
Approximately 2500 lbs, although weight varies depending on how much moisture is in the soil.

When is the best time of year to install sod?
As long as you can properly prepare the ground, sod can be installed any time of the year. Sod installed in the spring and fall requires less water than sod installed in the summer. We harvest and deliver year-round.
How do I prepare the ground for new sod?
Start with rototilling the soil to a depth of 4-6 inches. Establish your final grade by raking and leveling the soil. Grade soil to 1 inch below sidewalks, driveways and patios to provide a smooth transition onto the new lawn. Use a lawn roller to firm the soil, and then apply starter fertilizer. Lightly work fertilizer into the soil with a rake. Wetting down the soil is not necessary other than lightly misting on very hot summer days.
How long after I order before my sod is delivered?
Usually about 1-2 days for zone 1 (Vancouver to Salem). However, this may vary during our busy season.
How long can I wait before installing sod?
Sod is highly perishable and needs to be installed immediately. Please make sure that your ground is prepared prior to the arrival of your sod.
Is it necessary to roll the sod after installation?
We recommend that you only roll your soil prior to installing sod.
How much water does my lawn need?
New lawns need water daily for the first 2 weeks to prevent dehydration. It may be necessary to water twice a day on hot or windy days. Established lawns need approximately 1-1.5 inches of water per week during the summer months. Deep watering 2-3 times per week is recommended to encourage deep root growth. Light watering merely dampens the surface and is of little value to the root system.
How long after installation can I use my lawn?
About two weeks for light or normal use, up to four weeks for heavy traffic or rough activity.
How long should I wait before mowing?
Mowing can usually be done 2 weeks after installation. Never remove more than 1/3 of the blade at one time. The recommended mowing height is 2-2.5 inches. Leaving the lawn height higher in the summer will help relieve heat stress.
How often do I need to fertilize?
Most lawns require fertilizer every 4 to 6 weeks from April through October. Always follow the manufacturer's directions. Never apply fertilizer by hand, use a rotary or drop spreader for an even application. Water your lawn immediately after applying fertilizer.
Are mushrooms harmful to my lawn?
Mushrooms are a sign of good moisture and soil. They will not do any damage and will go away on their own. It is not necessary to treat them with anything, but you may rake them out if they bother you.
What if I have a lot of shade?
Our Ryegrass sod can tolerate a little bit of shade. We do have a matching shade tolerant seed that you can use to overseed in the spring or fall if you notice thinning in your lawn. Our Fescue sod can tolerate a little more shade than the Ryegrass sod, but isn't a foolproof "shade sod" for heavily shaded areas
